The Property and Evidence Clerk receives stores, retrieves, dispenses, and disposes of all evidence, found property or property held for safekeeping. The Property and Evidence Clerk maintains the chain of custody of evidence to ensure integrity for criminal prosecutions. This includes maintaining detailed inventory storage records, check in and check out logs, and evidence disposition records.
When authorized by court order or policy, the Property and Evidence Clerk releases property to victims, owners or suspects. Also prepares property for police auctions and makes arrangement for the destruction of weapons, narcotics and intoxicating beverages as prescribed by law.
Annually the Property and Evidence Clerk processes approximately 5,000 pieces of new property and evidence, and maintains a total of approximately 25,000 items in inventory.
